The 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out Saturday evening. Voted on by members of SAG-AFTRA, the years’ finest achievements in acting were acknowledged according to their peers. Spotlight, Tom McCarthy’s fact-based docu-drama chronicling the Boston Globe’s 2001 Pulitzer Prize winning investigation of sex abuse in the Catholic Church, earned top honors as its ensemble cast took home the top prize of the evening. Spotlight rallied, in what has been contentious awards season, besting PGA winner The Big Short as well as other nominees Beasts of No Nation, Straight Outta Compton and Trumbo.
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Brie Larson (Room) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) took home acting trophies, all furthering their cases for potential Oscar wins at the end of February. The upset of the evening, and the standout moment of the evening, likely occurred when Idris Elba took home the Best Supporting Actor prize for his performance in Beasts of No Nation. With continued controversy stemming from the lack of people of color acknowledged in the Oscar race, the win for Elba (who wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award) is particularly notable. Members of SAG celebrated diversity across the board as expressed with their television winners (Elba won a second SAG Award for his performance in the television series Luther, for instance) and seemed to make a particular statement regarding diversity in the industry.
