The Wrap has reported on what the potential sequels to the film John Carter could have been. John Carter was a science-fiction action film that was released on March 9th, 2012. The film is regarded as one of the biggest box office failures in film history. The film centered around protagonist John Carter, a Civil War colonel who is transported to the planet Mars.
The film starred Taylor Kitsch, known for the role of Ray Jackson in 21 Bridges, Lynn Collins, known for the role of Liz Rhodes in Beneath Us, and Willem Dafoe, known for his role as the Green Goblin in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy.
Andrew Stanton, director of John Carter, mentions that the sequel to the original film would have been titled Gods of Mars. This potential sequel would have expanded the universe and lore established in the first film. Stanton compared this possible sequel to Beneath the Planet of the Apes in the sense that this sequel would focus on those who live underground on Earth. Stanton mentions these underground dwelling people have been “really controlling the planet.”
Stanton acknowledges the fan base for the original film and mentions it is unfortunate that these fans will not get to see this sequel.
