Upcoming World War I Drama ‘1917’ Gets First Trailer

With Oscar season shortly around the corner, it’s expected that certain types of films will be released in an attempt to attract that Oscar gold. War dramas are often incredibly popular with the Academy, as seen by various recognizable Oscar nominated (and winning) entries like Saving Private Ryan and Dunkirk. This time the film in question is 1917, a World War I drama coming this holiday season from director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and distributed by Universal.

The newly released trailer for 1917 is short and simple, observing its two leads (played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman) traveling around the damaged wasteland and chaotic war zones of the first World War. Their mission is to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 comrades from a dangerous fate. The stakes of this “do or die? situation are further emphasized by a line from Colin Firth’s character, who warns “Should they fail, it’ll be a massacre.”

This trailer makes 1917 seem incredibly intense, showcasing some of the major aspects of World War I like No Man’s Land. Given how the war movie market tends to be overcrowded with films about World War II, it’s refreshing to see more focus placed on the war that preceded it and its harrowing conditions. Given Mendes’ talent with creating huge action set pieces in the James Bond franchise and even more intimate moments from his smaller films, it looks like 1917 will be an epic and dramatic entry that could certainly receive a ton of Oscar hype.

1917 is set for release on December 25th 2019. Watch the full trailer below:

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
