A whopping 124 documentary features made are eligible to contend for the Oscars this year. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released the list of films submitted to compete in the Best Documentary Feature category. Among the entries included is Asif Kapadia’s Amy, a documentary centering around the late Amy Winehouse. A critical and commercial hit (the film ranks as the top grossing documentary of the year in the U.S.), it will be interesting to see if the film can crack the often hard to read Documentary branch of the Academy.
Other films included are Davis Guggenheim’s He Named Me Malala, a profile on Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence (a semi-sequel to his Oscar nominated 2013 doc The Act of Killing) and Michael Moore’s eagerly anticipated Where to Invade Next (Moore won the Oscar for 2002’s Bowling for Columbine). Alex Gibney, nother past winner is back in the fold with not one but two films: Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief and Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine. Last year, Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour (a film centering around Edward Snowden) won the documentary Academy Award.
