Cloverfield, the found footage monster flick from 2008, is finally getting a direct sequel after 15 years, following two indirect sequels. Now that the original is getting a direct sequel, some buzz has been generated regarding a follow-up to the second film, 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Recently, Dan Trachtenberg, director of Lane, said he would be open to directing a sequel. He even had conversations with the original lead, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, about where her character would go following the end of Lane.
The film follows Winstead’s character caught in a seemingly world-ending situation, stuck in a bunker with two other people, one played by John Goodman. The mystery of what’s going on outside is slowly revealed throughout the movie, with Winstead questioning if there is anything.
“The [upcoming] sequel is to the original Cloverfield. But for our film, I would still totally be open to it. I think Mary would. … We talked a little bit in like ‘what if’ scenarios,” the director told Cinemablend.
“And then I was pulled, all the filmmakers were sort of pulled into other things. But I would still consider it. There’s a lot that would be in the genre that that would be in, but you never know. The sequel they’re making is very cool.”
The Cloverfield franchise is known for its sense of mystery, as Comicbook.com states. The first movie was rumored to be a kind of Godzilla film, keeping the premise under wraps. Lane only got one trailer before release, and Cloverfield Paradox, the third film, was shown off during the 2018 Super Bowl, set to drop on Netflix mere hours later.
The fourth Cloverfield movie will be written by Joe Barton and directed by Babak Anvari.
