Weekly Trailer Roundup – 8/25/14 thru 8/31/14

Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…

These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.

It’s the end of summer, which means we’re two months out from Halloween, a.k.a Hollywood’s excuse to vomit out a torrent of cheaply-made horror movies, hoping to take advantage of teen girls’ burning desire to be scared and teenage boys’ burning desire to be wherever the teenage girls are. Thus there was a deluge of trailers for horror movies last week, which, when watched one after the other, combine into one forgettable stream of screaming, hacking, slicing, choppily edited montage. So instead we’ve decided to focus on five decidedly non-horror trailers, some for awards contenders we’ve been anticipating for months, and some for movies we didn’t even know existed before this.

Fear not horror buffs, we’ve got a full list, including links, of all those upcoming gore-fests at the bottom of this article.

#5 – White Bird in a Blizzard Theatrical Trailer

Adapted from the novel by Laura Kasischke, this might feel like yet another coming-of-age drama starring Shailene Woodley were it not for the presence of director Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation), which hints at something altogether darker and more compelling.

#4 – Harmontown Theatrical Trailer

Any thoughts that Harmontown might be more than just a thinly-veiled stroke of the Community creator are ego  are immediately dashed by this first trailer. It appears the underlying message of this “documentary” will be – ‘Dan Harmon, despite his faults, is the greatest human alive.’

#3 – The Connection International Trailer (now with subtitles!)

A European take on William Friedkin’s The French Connection could be a lot of things in the wrong hands – pretentious, unnecessary, hacky. But after watching this trailer, it appears that in the hands of emerging French filmmaker Cedric Jimenez it could very well be an exciting, essential piece of filmmaking.

#2 – Rosewater Theatrical Trailer

On the one hand, we will be there on opening night no matter what to see Jon Stewart’s directorial debut. On the other hand, is it possible the man known for his incisive wit and sarcasm has made something as overly earnest and trite as this trailer appears to be?

#1 – Foxcatcher Theatrical Teaser 3

There isn’t even really any new footage in this third teaser for Bennet Miller’s new movie, but wow, does this look good.
