Great Podcasts For Movie Lovers

Do you love movies but struggle to find a community of movie lovers like yourself? The Big Picture (The Ringer)

In 2017, the Ringer podcast studio launched a movie podcast that is now given to cinephiles in an IV drip. Hosted by the ever-knowledgeable Sean Fennessey and the ever-joyful Amanda Dobbins and produced by Bobby Wagner. The podcast covers various subjects, from filmmaker interviews and movie drafts to conversations with fellow Ringer staff and building a hall of fame for directors or actors.

Notable episodes: The 1999 Movie Draft, The Oppenheimer Deep Dive, The Barbie Deep Dive with Greta Gerwig, and The 2025 Oscars: Anora Has the Greatest Day.

Too Scary; Didn’t Watch (Headgum)

In 2019, three wonderful women created a podcast called “Too Scary; Didn’t Watch,” a horror movie recap podcast for those too scared to watch for themselves.  It is hosted by Emily (who is too scared to watch scary movies), Henley (who is also too scared to watch scary movies), and Sammy (who loves scary movies). They will have guests ranging from comedian Paul F. Thompkins to Oscar winner Jordan Peele, who come on and talk about scary movies (and sometimes not too scary).

Notable Episodes: Longlegs with Alicia Witt, Hereditary with George Basil, Barbarian with Zach Cregger, and Death Becomes Her.

The Rewatchables (The Ringer)

Hosted by Ringer founder and former ESPN writer Bill Simmons and inspired by the rewatchability of the 1995 Michael Mann classic Heat, this podcast focuses solely on the watchability of movies that we have grown to love. Bill sits with Ringer favorites Sean Fennessey, Chris Ryan, Amanda Dobbins, Juliet Litman, Mallory Rubin, Van Lathan, Joanna Robinson, Wesley Morris, and Craig Horlbeck, also bringing on Michael Mann, Quentin Tarantino, and Bill’s Dad.

Notable Episodes: The Three-Heat with Michael Mann, Boogie Nights parts 1 & 2, Spotlight, and Groundhog Day with Issa Rae.

Blank Check with Griffin and David (Blank Check Productions)

Every episode is opened by a completely unhinged yet masterful monologue delivered by Griffin Newman, one of the hosts of “Blank Check,” quickly followed by some critiques by David Sims, the other half of the duo. “Black Check” is a podcast that takes a filmmaker and goes through their entire filmographies. They have covered the filmographies of Tim Burton, Elaine May, James Cameron, and the late David Lynch (just to name a few). Their roster of guests is just as impressive Tatiana Maslany, Rachel Zegler, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sean Fennessey, David Krumholtz, and Reece Feldman (also to name a few). It’s perfect for those who want to study a director’s entire career.

Talking Pictures (TCM and Max)

Famed TCM host Ben Mankiewicz hosts this podcast produced by HBO Max, in which he sits with notable celebrities to talk about their career beginnings, the movies that inspired them, and the movies that they love. Full of humor, heart, and the podcast is love of movies. Notable guests include Charles Barkley, Bill Murray, Emerald Fennell, Steven Soderbergh, and Henry Winkler.

Notable Episodes: Interview with Carol Burnett, Interview with Bill Hader, Interview with Mel Brooks, and Interview with Mario Cantone.

Unspooled (Realm)

What if there was a show that went through the AFI top 100 films? What if there was a podcast that went through the Letterboxd top 150 films? What if there was a podcast that went through the top 1,000 movies of all time? Well…there is a podcast for that it’s called “Unspooled” hosted by LA Times critic Amy Nicholson and actor/writer/director Paul Scheer. It all began with the AFI top 100 films of all time list and it grew into the neverending quest to find 100 greatest films to shoot into space.

Front Row Classics (The Front Row Classic Network)

Brandon Davis hosts this podcast about classic films that have shaped us, from E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial to Bonnie and Clyde. He also has an impressive pedigree of guests including all 5 TCM hosts Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone, Dave Karger, Eddie Muller, and Jacqueline Stewart; as well as Patricia Ward (the widow of the late Gene Kelly) and Oscar® nominee Cathy Moriarty.

Awards Chatter (The Hollywood Reporter)

Scott Feinberg of Hollywood Reporter fame hosts this podcast that interviews the filmmakers and stars behind our favorite award-winning movies and shows. Every episode starts with the question, “Where were you born, where did you grow up, and what did your parents do for a living?” which then leads the guests to tell the listener their way to fame and success.

Never Seen It with Betsy and Trent (Spotify)

Every Sunday, married couple Betsy and Trent drop a new episode of their podcast called “Never Seen It.” Each episode is a movie that neither of them has seen (which goes to show that movie buffs can’t see everything). It is funny and full of heart; a must-have for those who cannot watch everything.

The Movies That Made Me (SpectreVision Radio)

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Josh Olson and cult favorite director Joe Dante host this podcast that interviews filmmakers and actors on the top 10 movies that shaped them. Whether it be the top 10 that inspired their movie or the top 10 that influenced them; this show gives listeners the insight they’ve always wanted into these film legends.

Notable Episodes: Babygirl writer/director Halina Reijn, Clerks filmmaker Kevin Smith, Dìdi actress Joan Chen, and Podcaster/filmmaker Mike Flanagan.

Raiders of the Lost Podcast (Spotify)

Identical twin brothers Anthony and James Deveney host this podcast, whose title was inspired by the 1981 Steven Spielberg classic Raiders of the Lost Ark. They discuss new and old movies, interview filmmakers, share their love of IMDb and Letterboxd and discuss what movies they have seen that week.
