As part of Fathom Events re-releasing the classics this past year, From Here to Eternity is scheduled to hit the big screen after 60 years on December 11th and December 14th. This will mark the final classic film to hit theaters this year and what better way to end it all with a compelling love story surrounding the events of the Pearl Harbor attack. It’s a film about life and choices we make. It’s a film that feels real especially with it’s incredible cast including; Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, and Ernest Borgnine.
Directed by Fred Zinnemann and proving to be a financial and critical success, From Here to Eternity rightfully deserves to be seen once more on the big screen. Winner of 8 Academy Awards, the film was one of the most popular films of 1953 even though the Army and Navy were highly displeased with the result of the film due to the unrealistic portrayal of the Army and Navy; not to mention the major differences from the novel with which the film is based on. Also included is the famous beach scene and Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. A film targeted for adults based on the subject matter but a film that exemplifies a fantastic character study.
I rather enjoy older films because of how different they are from the films of today and while I have not had the chance to see this film, I do look forward to seeing it. The plot is simple, a young private is punished because he doesn’t want to compete on the boxing team due to a prior event. Plus the private’s Captain’s wife and the second in command fall in love. It’s a story that I will be unique due to my enjoyment of the earlier classic On the Waterfront released earlier this year. I want to walk into the theater and not know the plot, I want to be surprised and be immersed in the story, the characters, and whatever else will be in store.
