Lionsgate dropped a new trailer for Spiral: From the Book of Saw on Tuesday as the horror franchise embarks on a new chapter in sinister entertainment. The film, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV), premieres only in theaters on May 14, 2021. Spiral initially scheduled for release nearly one year ago, but will now be hitting theaters as more and more cities are approved to reopen them safely.
Chris Rock stars as Detective Zeke Banks who has been enlisted to investigate a series of murders thought to be committed by a Jigsaw copycat, reminding him of the city’s bloody history. Written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, Spiral’s horror has been reported as more psychologically torturous than purely blood and gore, marking a return to Saw‘s trademark mind games.
Acting alongside Rock is Samuel L. Jackson in the role of Detective Banks’ father Marcus who appears to go missing during his son’s investigation. Marisol Nichols (Riverdale) and Max Minghella (Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, The Ides of March) also feature as members on Banks’ police squad.
The trailer also showcases a new song for the movie by 21 Savage and Slaughter Gang, aptly titled “Spiral.”
