Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino has been selected to direct Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood, a narrative adaption of the 2017 documentary. Both the documentary and narrative film are based on Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars written by Scotty Bowers. The story was also recently used as an inspiration in the Netflix series Hollywood, by Ryan Murphy.
The book follows a bisexual World War II Marine combat veteran Scotty Bowers. Bowers became a well-known figure in the LGBT+ community during that time and served as an in-between to set up dates for Hollywood’s closeted gay population including major stars such as Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Bowers was able to successfully create an environment where LGBT+ persons could thrive and be themselves while also interacting with others in their community. He was able to create a safe space for sexual encounters in a very dangerous time when actors’ entire careers were on the line if their homosexuality were to be discovered. The book then details the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and how it affected the LGBT+ community in Hollywood.
The script for the film is being written by Seth Rogen and his longtime partner Evan Goldberg, and is produced by Corey Reeser and Point Grey Pictures.
