According to Twitch, Korean actress Kim Soo-hyun has joined the cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron. She will play the role of a villain but it has not been specified which character. Avengers: Age of Ultron will be Soo-hyun’s Hollywood debut. Twitch also confirmed rumors that some scenes for Age of Utron will be shot in South Korea.
Considering that Soo-hyun’s role has not been revealed, Ultron’s name is in the title, and the rest of the cast features recognizable names, it seems unlikely that Soo-hyun will play a large part in the film. She could be here primarily to lay the groundwork for stage three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson will both participate in the South Korea shoot.
The Avengers made over half of its $1.5 billion gross in foreign markets and both it and Iron Man 3 proved massively popular with Korean audiences. These moves definitely indicate a greater acknowledgement of oversees audiences in the success of massive blockbusters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe in particular represents a massive undertaking in terms of both cast and plot and virtually requires strong international interest. Marvel and Disney certainly seem to have the foresight to look for ways to reach out to as wide a crowd as possible in order to sustain this project.
