Wonder Woman (2017) proved two things: one, that DC can make a good movie when it actually tries, and two, that a movie about a lady superhero can be immensely profitable. Aquaman and Shazam have put DC on an uptick in quality with their movies – it seems origin stories are their specialty. So who could say no to a movie about DC Comics’ Mistress of Magic, Zatanna?
Rumors about a Zatanna movie being developed at Warner Bros. Studios have recently come to light. And it’s about time Zatanna Zatara made her big screen debut. Not mentioning the countless comic storylines she’s appeared in, Zatanna has made appearances in several tv shows over the last few decades since her conception: Batman: The Animated Series, Young Justice, Smallville, and most recently, Harley Quinn, but never has Ms. Zatara been in a big budget blockbuster, much less given her own movie.
When asked about the rumors of a Zatanna movie, comic writer Gail Simone confirmed the news with a simple “Yep” on Twitter, though the tweet was later removed – the plot thickens.
For those you who aren’t aware, Zatanna Zatara is both a stage magician and also a real magic wielder. She is the daughter of Giovanni “John” Zatara, whose footsteps she followed in as a master illusionist. Zatanna has never been one of the Justice League, though she has assisted them from time to time. It’s hard to predict how a Zatanna movie would crossover with the DCEU Justice League, but since Zatanna’s father plays a role in Bruce Wayne’s past, perhaps she could have a cameo in a Batman film.
