Netflix has released the first official trailer of BlacKkKlansman director Spike Lee‘s upcoming feature film Da 5 Bloods.
The story follows four African-American veterans who return to Vietnam to find the remains of their fallen squad leader. They are confronted by the lingering effects of the devastating war as they seek a promised treasure the leader helped them hide. The trailer is action-heavy, full of glimpses of men fighting in Vietnam while switching between documentary-esque footage from the war and U.S. anti-war protests. There are also flashbacks of Boseman’s character suggesting they bury a trunk full of gold bars.
Da 5 Bloods features Chadwick Boseman as the fallen squad leader, alongside Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis and Isiah Whitlock Jr. as the veteran men. They are joined by Lindo’s concerned son, played by Jonathan Majors. The cast also features Melanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Van Veronica Ngo and Jean Reno.
Lee directed, produced and co-wrote the film with Danny Bilson, Paul DeMeo and Kevin Willmott. The movie is executive produced by Jonathan Filley, Barry Levine and Mike Bundlie. It was supposed to play at Cannes, with Lee having been named jury president this year, but the festival was cancelled due to the coronavirus.
Lee mentioned that Da 5 Bloods will also examine the racial politics of the U.S. during the late 1960s, particularly after Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination. He stated that after the assassination, the United States Armed Forces were almost torn apart when black soldiers heard the news, learning “that their brothers and sisters were tearing shit up in over 100 cities across America. The tipping point came very close; the black soldiers were getting ready to set it off in Vietnam—and not against the Vietcong either.”
Da 5 Bloods will be available to watch on Netflix starting June 12. Watch the trailer below:
