With the Coronavirus sweeping the globe, every upcoming feature film and television program has halted production. However, for directors and writers like Kevin Smith, this lengthy hiatus has allowed them to simply focus on write on future projects. According to Movieweb, Smith announced on Facebook that he would be working on the scripts to Mallrats 2 and Clerks 3.
Smith explained to fans earlier this week that he would be hiking the trails of Snake Mountain and Runyon Canyon to assist his writing process. “And now that everything has been canceled for a month or two, I will have time to finish the Twilight of the Mallrats and Clerks 3 scripts,” Smith confirmed. “Hiking and writing: that’s my pandemic plan. Stay safe, my friends.”
Entitled Twilight of the Mallrats, the sequel to Smith’s 1990s cult classic Mallrats has been in development hell for years, with the most recent production attempt dating back to 2016. However, the film never saw fruition due to Smith’s displeasure with the product, leading to multiple recasting and delays. It would eventually divulge into a television series but never found its way off the ground, due to Smith’s struggle to land a network or streaming platform. After the smash success of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Smith decided to revisit a sequel to Mallrats.
