With Disney’s newest live action remake Mulan coming out in less than a month, it was expected that reactions to the film will come sooner than later. Many were curious, however, if this remake would get the mixed to negative reception that other live action Disney remakes have received in the past. Fortunately, early reactions for Mulan have surface after the film’s premiere yesterday. As of now, word of mouth suggests that the film is much better than most of us anticipated. And this is without “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” playing.
#MULAN is shockingly great?? The music really works and there’s an action sequence I’m sure audiences will be talking about for a long, long time. Wouldn’t dare spoil it but let’s just say that Mulan devours a million mile hoagie and if there was any CG used it was invisible. A+!

#Mulan is absolutely fantastic. Different enough with great action scenes, but with the heart of the original film. It doesn't even matter that it's not a musical. If you're a fan of the animated, there are subtle nods to many of the songs. Can’t wait to see this again.

Reactions to Mulan on Twitter and Instagram have praised the film for honoring the original animated picture. The posts reassured fans of the animated film that there are many nods to the film’s original soundtrack, despite not being a musical. Many also praised Mulan for its production design and cinematography, declaring it gorgeous from a technical standpoint. Possibly one of the most notable reactions was from one of the original 1998 Disney film’s directors, Tony Bancroft, who expressed in an Instagram post, “I’m telling you all right now, they brought honor to the original, it’s a terrific film!”
While first reactions aren’t always a guarantee for a film’s box office and critical success, these certainly boost some promise for Mulan. Given how it’s being praised by a decent amount of people often critical of live action Disney remakes, this already makes the film sound more promising than your average remake. Hopefully when Mulan releases later this month, the box office and critical performance will match those early reactions.
Mulan is set for release on March 27th 2020.
