Live action Disney remakes have always made an attempt to appeal to older audience nostalgia for the original animated classic. With the upcoming Mulan remake on the horizon, it’s clear that this mentality is still going on, but with a twist. It has been officially announced that Mulan will receive a PG-13 Rating by the MPAA. This is the first live-action Disney remake to receive this new rating, as prior Disney remakes such as Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast were still rated PG.

Not only is this a first for Disney’s live-action remake department, but also a rarity for Disney in general. Excluding their Star Wars and Marvel projects, very few films have been given the PG-13 rating under the Walt Disney Pictures division. There have only been ten other films under the Disney name with the PG-13 rating, those being Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, John Carter, The Lone Ranger, Saving Mr. Banks, The Finest Hours and the Pirates of the Carribbean films.

This decision to give Mulan a PG-13 could be promising for the upcoming film. Many Disney fans feel a proper remake of the original animated classic should be more action-oriented considering how the story deals with a woman going into war. The fact that this film is going for a mature PG-13 rating as opposed to the more family friendly PG rating does suggest some potential to cover new territory that the animated Mulan never achieved. Add in the fact that Mushu is absent from this film, audiences may receive a much more adult version of Mulan than what Disney offered back in 1998.

Mulan is set for release March 27th 2020.
