Focus Features has officially leapfrogged A24 for the acquisition of global film rights for Miranda July’s upcoming film Kajillionaire, which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival according to Deadline. Focus Features will be managing the film’s domestic distribution, while Universal has been tasked with handling the film’s international rights.
Directed and written by July, Kajillionaire tells the story of two con artists named Theresa and Robert who endure the past 26 years grooming their only child, Old Dolio (Westworld‘s Evan Rachel Wood) to crook around and swipe about every opportunity that presents itself. While embroiled in a poorly-devised heist, the trio encounters a good-hearted woman named Melanie (Gina Rodriguez) and con her into being part of their upcoming schemes. This sudden addition puts a wrench in Old Dolio’s methodology, as the unlikely pairing of her and Melanie starts to challenges Dolio’s beliefs. She later sees herself at a crossroad in which she must decide on what’s more sacred: a family who brought her into a criminal underbelly, despite it being her only source of warmth, or the idea of personal freedom.
The film will also star Wood and Rodriguez alongside Oscar-nominated actors Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger. A widespread release date for Kajillionaire has not yet been announced.
