With streaming services releasing their own original films, now box office numbers are not the only way to measure the popularity of a film. Netflix is one of the biggest streaming sites, so they have their own rankings that show who’s been watching what.
The top film of the year, they revealed, was Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston comedy Murder Mystery. For the films opening weekend alone, the film received over 30 million hits.
The other top ten films of 2019 are as follows:
1. Murder Mystery
2. 6 Underground
3. The Incredibles 2
4. The Irishman
5. Triple Frontier
6. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
7. The Highwaymen
8. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
9. Wreck-It Ralph 2
10. Secret Obsession
The way that the most popular films is determined is by measuring how many subscribers tune into a program for at least 2 minutes within 28 days of release.
The list may come as no surprise, since Murder Mystery featured two long standing comedy icons, 6 Underground is Michael Bay’s newest venture, Incredibles 2 is a Disney sequel, and The Irishman and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse have both been met with much critical acclaim.
With Netflix releasing so much original content in all genres and of all calibers, these stats likely will influence their decisions on what to greenlight in the upcoming year.
