Back in January it was announced that the beloved comedy Coming to America would be receiving a much anticipated sequel. At that time there was no production date set or when the film was going to be released. But Deadline has now announced that the film is set for release on August 7, 2020.
The film will see the return of Eddie Murphy as the titular African prince Akeem. The original director Craig Brewer (Empire, Footloose, Hustle and Flow) will also be returning and teaming up with writer Kenya Barris, creator behind the hit show Black-ish. Deadline also revealed that Barris is re-writing the original script written by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield who have worked together on numerous projects including The Nutty Professor, Boomerang and the original 1988 Coming to America.
Deadline discusses that the second film will revolve around Akeem learning that he has a long lost son, compeling him to return back to America and meet the unlikely heir to his throne.
It is exciting to see Eddie Murphy reprise his role, especially after staying out of the spotlight for the last several years. With some of the returning cast and original director, Coming 2 America could be one of the funniest comedy blockbuster of the year.
