In recent memory, one of the biggest elements DC Cinematic Universe fans have been questioning is whether or not Ben Affleck is going to be the cape crusader with his own solo movie. The DC Cinematic Universe version of Batman will still have a solo outing, this time with a 2021 release date under the name, The Batman. However, to much dismay, Ben Affleck is said to not return for the role.
Rumors speculating about Affleck’s departure from the role began two years ago when it was revealed that he will not be directing The Batman. Instead, War of the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield director, Matt Reeves, will be in the directing chair. He is charged with writing the upcoming feature film as well.
The Batman is set to have a younger version of the character in the role, therefore only time will tell who will be the masked crusader now. Considering the character Affleck played was meant to be older and grittier, it makes sense to get a new actor. Additionally, there were rumors that Ben Affleck tired with the role. The only hint of Affleck’s involvement as Batman is the actor’s recent tweet promoting and expressing excitement for the new film. However, with the new direction for the film, Affleck would only appear in a minor role.
Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life. https://t.co/GNgyJroMIO
