It seems like fans of many franchises can find it hard to catch a break amidst bad sequels and years of hiatus (unless you find yourself a superhero fan). One group of fans that has had a slew of rough films thrown at them is those of the Predator series. Ever since the awesome 1987 original there has been really only disappointment with an awful 1990 sequel, a flawed but gritty and nostalgic 2010 reboot, and a fast paced and enjoyable 2018 sequel with confusing plot and pacing. Even though Shane Black imbued his knack for witty humor in dialogue with some blockbuster level effects, it fell short with low box office numbers and even lower critical success. Regardless of the mess of the last 30 years, a few days ago we Predator fans were given a sweet and blood soaked holiday themed treat.
To promote the DVD release of The Predator, 20th Century Fox released a video titled The Predator Holiday Special via their Youtube channel. This two-minute stop-motion animated short shows the events that unfold if a Predator were to stumble into the North Pole, wreaking havoc on elves and reindeer alike. Filled with gags and references to the Predator franchise, mainly the Schwarzenegger original, this extremely violent piece of fun depicts Santa’s team of magical reindeer trained in military weaponry as they fire automatic rifles at the alien beast but find themselves blown to pieces. The Predator doesn’t end up fighting Santa, as an elf hungry for revenge murders all the Predators that appear before Kris Kringle, spewing their gooey green blood all over the snow.
At the end of the video, the multiple Predators hand a basket of what seems to be Easter eggs to Santa Claus with one of them being an egg for a facehugger from the Alien franchise. This reference might double down on the alternate ending of The Predator which also held some connection the Alien universe, hinting at possible plans for more crossovers. With the disappointment of The Predator, we might not see another installment sometime soon, but there might be promise for another Alien movie with talks of Prometheus 2. However, The Predator Holiday Special is a great bit of holiday marketing that provides the gore, decapitation, and violence that fans of Predator have become accustomed to.
