DC’s next installment in their ever growing Cinematic Universe continues as Aquaman is set to be released within the next few weeks. Like most modern day blockbusters, Warner Brothers is premiering the film overseas prior to its American premiere. The foreign market plays a huge role in the industry nowadays, especially in countries like China where the blockbuster is becoming more and more popular to Chinese audiences. This is not an exception for Aquaman as the underwater hero makes a huge debut in China with an RMB 169.5 million ($24.6 million), becoming the biggest opening day for China.
With a box office debut like that and gaining about 86% of the market on its opening day, Aquaman is set to be immensely popular in the Chinese market – will it translate to the United States? With good word of mouth from critics and audiences, the film is set to make even more money than initially expected.
Despite still having a full week till its official release, Aquaman is still expected to make a big debut in the states with early word of mouth being very good and a lot of hype surrounding the James Wan-directed superhero film. This will be good for DC and Warner Brothers after the disappointing audience reactions and box office results from Justice League. Aquaman will likely serve as a vast improvement to the DC brand and one that will encourage Warner Brothers to continue with their property in the same vein of films like Aquaman and Wonder Woman.
