Director Hirokazu Koreeda won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for his drama Shoplifters, which follows a family struggling to stay together despite a secret that could tear them apart. A group of small-time crooks, the family must face consequences after taking in a child they find on the street.

Koreeda, a Japanese director, became the second Asian filmmaker to win the Palme d’Or this century – after Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who won the prize for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives in 2010. He is also known for films such as Nobody Knows, Still Walking, and Like Father, Like Son

Shoplifters will be released in Japan on June 8. It does not yet have a U.S. distributor or release date.
