TIFF wrapped up earlier today after 11 days of screening over 300 movies, ending the festival with its awards ceremony. The highest award, the Grolsch People’s Choice, went to Three Billboards Outside, Ebbing, Missouri. The darkly comic drama is written and directed by Martin McDonagh and stars Academy Award winner Frances McDormand. In some ways, the choice was an upset, as the films receiving a lot of buzz throughout the festival, Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, were shut out. The win bodes well for Three Billboard’s Oscar chances. Past recipients of the coveted award include 12 Years a Slave, Silver Linings Playbook, The King’s Speech, Slumdog Millionaire, Room, and La La Land. I, Tonya, Craig Gillespie’s biographic film of competitive figure ice skater Tonya Harding, was first runner-up.
Joseph Kahn took home the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award for his rap satire Bodied. James Franco’s The Disaster Artist was named first runner-up.
The People’s Choice Documentary Award went to Faces Places, a French film about a director and a photographer/muralist’s journey through the villages of rural France.
The Canada Goose Award for Best Canadian Feature Film went to Robin Aubert’s zombie thriller Les Affamés. Sadaf Foroughi’s Ava won the FIPRESCI award for the Discovery program. The Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics Special Presentations category was awarded to Manuel Martin Cuenca’s The Motive.
Warwick Thornton’s Australian Western Sweet Country took home the $25,000 Toronto Platform prize.
