It looks like there may be a Fast and Furious spin-off coming at us in the near future. Universal has been brainstorming ways to further the Fast and Furious universe, and this has included spin-off films. According to different reports, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Charlize Theron are among the actors that the studio would like to be involved, although none of them have officially signed on.
The story idea is to have Johnson’s character, U.S. Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs, form an alliance with Statham’s character Decker Shaw. Chris Morgan, the writer behind the five films in the Fast and Furious franchise, would write the script. Ideally, the movie could be made in the time between filming for the primary franchise.
The Fast and the Furious franchise remains Universal’s biggest franchise of all time, with the eight films making a combined gross of $4.808 billion since the first film in 2001. Although the films are set in Los Angeles, the first film was based on an article, titled “Racer X” by Ken Li, which detailed the culture of New York street clubs racing Japanese cars late at night.
Johnson can be seen next in the feature film version of Baywatch, as well as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle later this year. He is also signed on for a San Andreas sequel, a third installment of the Journey series, and Disney’s live-action Jungle Cruise, based off the iconic ride.
Statham can next be seen in Meg, which is due to be released next year, and stars Ruby Rose and Rainn Wilson. Statham is signed on for Spy 2, although other original stars such as Melissa McCarthy and Jude Law have yet to officially attach themselves to the project. He is also signed on for The Expendables 4.
Theron can next be seen in Atomic Blonde, in which she portrays an undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War. Next she can be seen in comedy Tully, written by Juno scribe Diablo Cody. She is also signed on to appear with Seth Rogen in the comedy Flarsky.
Stay tuned for more details about the Fast and Furious spin-off.
