In a recent interview with Complex, Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol.1 and Vol.2) director James Gunn dropped two separate bombs. Gunn confirmed that a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is definitely going to happen, but also that he’s not sure whether or not he will be a part of it.
There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.
Regardless of Gunn’s indecision, it looks as though he’ll be swaying one way or the other soon. It will likely be somewhat of a shock to the franchise if he does decide to leave, as he has had a large role in the creative process in shaping the characters and maintaining their continuity throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, in an interview with i09 regarding the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, Gunn revealed:
I gave [the Russo brothers] tons of advice on how to direct the actors, talked to them a lot during the shooting, and talked to the actors a lot during the shooting to make sure that the Guardians are staying authentic.
Based on this comment, it seems as though Gunn is slowly warming himself up to the idea of letting the Guardians go, as long as they are in good hands. At this point, Guardians 3 seems to be a long way off though, seeing as how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 still hasn’t hit theaters, and we are only aware of the MCU film schedule up through 2019. It may be quite some time before fans obtain rock solid answers.
Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 hits theaters on May 5.
