Writer-director Charlie McDowell is going out there for his next picture – a morbid romantic science fiction puzzler called The Discovery, which stars Rooney Mara, Jason Segel and Robert Redford – much like he did for his feature debut three years back, the eerie romance The One I Love. The first teaser trailer has arrived.
The film – which will make its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival this coming Friday – centers around what takes place after science proves the existence of the an afterlife – the titular “discovery” and one made by Dr. Thomas Harbor (Redford). Shortly thereafter, a rash of people begin to take their own lives in an effort to discover for themselves. As such, Mara and Segel portray a couple who attempt to lead the charge in suicide prevention. Can’t really get much more high premise than that, can you? Riley Keough (American Honey) and Jesse Plemons (Other People) also star. Justin Lader co-wrote the script alongside McDowell.
