According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures is planning on rebooting Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers, the 1997 sci-fi film. The writers are the duo Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the men behind the upcoming Baywatch movie starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. Other members of the production crew include: Neal H. Moritz (Fast and Furious) and Toby Jaffe (Total Recall). None of these people have worked on the previous movie.
Starship Troopers is based on the sci-fi war novel by Robert A. Heinlein, which centers around a soldier named Johnny Rico. He movies up in the ranks during mankind’s war against bugs from outer space. The previous director of the 1997 film, Verhoeven, took themes from the novel and put them into his work which satirized facism and militarism. When it first came out in 1997 it was a mild success but it did earn a cult following. During the early ’00s with the DVD boom, Starship Troopers was so popular it warranted three other direct-to-DVD movies.
This will not be a film remake, but rather a reboot. The studio will be going back to the source material to write an all new story.
