Following the success of Sony’s Don’t Breathe, director Fede Alvarez is in line to helm one of Sony’s major franchises.
This morning, Variety reported that Alvarez is the studio’s choice to direct The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which is the follow-up to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Since the rights to the David Lagercrantz book were acquired back in 2015, this project has been a high-priority and tapped Steven Knight to adapt the novel. The film is fast-tracked to be made next year.
In the novel, Salander teams up with journalist Mikael Blomkvist and they find themselves caught in a web of spies, cyber criminals, and corrupt government officials- who will do anything to keep their secrets hidden. None of the cast has yet been confirmed, although Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara has expressed interest in returning to the role.
