Tony-winning director Sam Gold is in talks to helm Letters From Rosemary starring Emma Stone (La La Land). This would be Gold’s feature directorial debut. The news was first reported by Variety.
The Black List spec script by first-timer Nick Yarborough centers on the life of Rose Marie Kennedy, who had a history of behavioral problems and underwent a botched prefrontal lobotomy at age 23, leaving her permanently disabled. “Rosemary” was the oldest daughter of Rose Fitzgerald and Joseph Kennedy, and the eldest sister of John, Robert and Ted Kennedy. The script focuses on the events leading up to the lobotomy and how the family was affected afterwards.
Steve Golin and Doug Wald of Anonymous Content, producers of this past year’s Oscar-winning Spotlight (Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay), will produce alongside Allard Cantor, Jarrod Murray and Richard Arlook. Anonymous Content was also behind 2015’s The Revenant, for which director Alejandro G. Inarritu won his second-in-a-row Oscar and star Leonardo DiCaprio won the Best Actor Oscar. Anonymous’ talent at backing winners is not limited to the big screen; they are also behind USA’s Mr. Robot which won star Rami Malek an Emmy this year for Oustanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as well as HBO’s critically acclaimed True Detective.
Gold, a well-known Broadway and off-Broadway director, won a Tony for 2015’s musical Fun Home. He is attached to helm an off-Broadway production of Othello starring David Oyelowo (Queen of Katwe).
