Finding Dory, Pixar’s 13-year-in-the-making sequel to their beloved 2003 animated feature Finding Nemo, was always expected to be a box office winner but the film’s phenomenal take at the box office has fared exceeded even the loftiest of expectations. On it’s opening weekend, Finding Dory shattered the record for an animated feature opening and three weeks later, the film is still leading the pack and helping to cushion what has been a fairly disappointing summer movie season. Over the Fourth of July weekend, Finding Dory celebrated another milestone in exceeding the gross of the first film as its cume now stands at $381 million (versus Nemo‘s $380 million total gross).
Rather unexpectedly, Finding Dory will soon take over Captain America: Civil War as the top-grossing title of the year at the domestic box office – Civil War (Marvel, like Pixar, is a subsidiary of Disney) has minted $405 million in North American ticket sales. Even more impressive is that Finding Dory was able to hold the number spot for three consecutive weekends and handily defeated would-be blockbusters like Independence Day: Resurgence, The Legend of Tarzan and Disney’s own The BFG. Finding Dory earned $41 million this past weekend ($51.4 million over the long Fourth of July weekend) but will likely be find a formidable challenger next weekend with the release of The Secret Life of Pets.
Finding Dory is the fourth Disney film this year to cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office alongside Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book and Zootopia.
