The simple set-up for this family film centers around an orphan named Pete (played by Oakes Fegly, This Is Where I Leave You) and his best mate, Elliott, you just happens to be a dragon. The impressive ensemble cast includes Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Oona Lawrence (Southpaw), Karl Urban (Star Trek), Wes Bentley (Welcome to Me) and screen icon Robert Redford (who last was seen on screen portraying legendary newsman Dan Rather opposite Cate Blanchett in the docudrama Truth).
The upcoming Pete’s Dragon continues to flesh out a theme that the Mouse House has put in focus the last few years of mining their classic properties for live-action reboots. Recently, Disney released the hits Maleficent (2014) starring Angelina Jolie and Cinderella (2015) starring Lily James; The Jungle Book is on the way. Specifically, Pete’s Dragon picks up on something else entirely in Disney’s decision to enlist off-the-beaten track filmmakers to assist. Outside of Lowry, fellow indie-spirited filmmaker Alex Ross Perry (Queen of Earth) was hired by Disney to pen a live-action take on Winnie-the-Pooh.
