With it being the eve of the Star Wars mania that’s sure to break out in a massive marketing push next month, new plot details and rumors have surfaced for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The fan site MakingStarWars.net is reporting that they have heard details on the events leading to the new Galactic Civil War that will be at the center of the new trilogy.
According to the report, the Republic’s new figurehead, Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), began corrupting the senate after the events of Episode VI, promising the same opulence they enjoyed before Emperor Palpatine dissolved the senate during A New Hope. Snoke is now promising to keep the senate intact. The senate has also allowed for the creation of The First Order – the villainous organization in the film – as long as they stay in the Outer Rim planets (although they have hopes that they will eventually take over). In the meantime, General Organa – a descendant of Leia’s adoptive parents – has secretly formed The Resistance army in preparation for The First Order’s rise to power. This causes the Republic to be split apart with some senators siding with Snoke and others with The Resistance.
While these details certainly make sense, they also involve a lot of political dealings that sound similar to those of the prequel trilogy from which director J.J. Abrams and Disney are hoping to separate themselves. While there are sure to be some political complications that lead to the trilogy’s central conflict, the messaging surrounding the film thus far has led us to believe it would happen in the background like in A New Hope. There’s a chance that these events will be relegated to the film’s opening crawl.
Disney recently released the first cannon novel through Del Ray publishing, Star Wars: Aftermath. The novel is the first in the Aftermath trilogy that bridges the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. As the second and third novels release, we will know whether these rumors are, in fact, true.
We’ll have more on Star Wars: The Force Awakens as its December 18 release date approaches.
