The City of Brotherly Love finds a new generation of underdog in the upcoming Creed, the latest edition in the historic ‘Rocky’ franchise. Sylvester Stallone (The Expendables series) reprises his classic Rocky Balboa role, here acting as a trainer and mentor for the son of his once rival but eventual friend Apollo Creed (played by Carl Weathers in the first four films of the canon).
The first trailer for the film focused mainly on Creed’s son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) and his troubled upbringing, with Balboa very much a supporting character. The newest trailer builds on Rocky’s role in helping Adonis develop as both a fighter and a human being as he prepares to follow his father’s footsteps into the ring. Tessa Thompson (Selma) plays Adonis’ love interest, with Phylicia Rashad (the TV classic The Cosby Show) as Mary Ann Creed, Apollo’s widow.
Ryan Coogler will direct from a script he wrote with Aaron Covington. The film reunites Coogler and Jordan, who previously teamed as director and star of 2013’s acclaimed Fruitvale Station.
Creed hits theaters on November 25. Check out the trailer below.
