Twentieth Century Fox has released the first image and details about their upcoming video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed, including a photo of Michael Fassbender (Macbeth) in full costume to Yahoo! Movies. Fox also released some new information about Fassbender’s character.
Fassbender will play Callum Lynch, a modern man who discovers his ancestor was a member of a secret society of assassins that span multiple generations and eras. In the game series, the group is in battle against another secret society, the evil Knights Templar. Lynch will have to use a machine called the animus to relive events from his ancestor Aguilar’s life as an assassin in 16th century Spain to learn how to defeat the Templars.
Despite rumors, Fassbender isn’t playing a character from any of the game series’ nine entries. Many of the games revolve around different descendents of assassins doing the same thing, though the movie will reportedly tell a unique story.
The movie will also star Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Michael Kenneth Williams (The Gambler), and Ariane Labed (Before Midnight). Their roles haven’t been disclosed at this time. The movie is currently set to be released December 21, 2016.
