Singer-songwriter John Legend’s production company, Let’s Get Lifted Films, has partnered with IM Global and Furst Films to make an untitled musical drama. The movie will star music recording artist Miguel, and will tell the story of a former one-hit wonder who gets back into music when he takes on an aspiring musician to prepare her for a singing competition audition.
The movie will be written by Taylor Cohen (Todd P Goes to Austin) and directed by music video director Nabil Elderkin. It’s the first acting project for Miguel.
Legend has worked as a producer on the documentary The Eden Project, which focused on an urban gardening project in South Central Los Angeles. This is the first fictional piece the Academy Award-winner has produced. Legend will also curate the music.
Musicals have been hit and miss with audiences in recent years. While they came out in droves to see Into The Woods last year, the Annie remake failed to find success critically or financially.
Legend’s movie will start production in September.
