In an intriguing bit of casting news, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac) is in negotiations to star in Independence Day 2, the sequel to Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi alien invasion hit from 1996. The film, which will star Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2) and Jessie Usher (When the Game Stands Tall), and see the returns of Jeff Goldblum (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Bill Pullman (The Equalizer), and director Emmerich (White House Down), is scheduled for release on June 24, 2016 for Fox.
If it happens, the casting of Gainsbourg would be an inspired choice. The actress is regarded as a fixture on the indie circuit, having never starred in a big budget film with a profile similar to Independence Day 2. Still, Gainsbourg has established an impressive career as a muse for director Lars Von Trier, with roles in Antichrist, Melancholia, and the aforementioned Nymphomaniac. She’s also been in other notable projects such as The Science of Sleep, 21 Grams, and I’m Not There.
Independence Day 2 was written by first-time feature writer Carter Blanchard, with actor/writers James A. Woods (Immortals) and Nicolas Wright (White House Down) working on the most recent drafts. No plot details have been divulged as of yet.
