The trailer for the Sundance Select indie comedy Appropriate Behavior has been released, featuring an Iranian twenty-something navigating her life in New York City. Lauded by comics and critics alike, the film features the challenges that are faced by the protagonist as she tries to figure out her own identity, spanning topics of sexuality and the Iranian-American experience.
Starring, written, and directed by Desiree Akhavan as Shirin, the story is about a twenty-something bisexual who struggling to find her own way in the world while juggling her bisexuality and her conservative family’s expectations. The film will depict Shirin’s private rebellion against her family’s straight-laced expectations after her brother’s betrothal, as she explores her own sexuality and tries to figure out what went wrong with her ex-girlfriend Maxine, played by Rebecca Henderson (Compliance). The film also stars Scott Adsit (TV’s 30 Rock), Halley Feiffer (Gentlemen Broncos), Ahn Duong (Scent of a Woman), and Arian Moayed (Rosewater). The film won the Grand Jury Prize for screenwriting from the San Diego Asian Film Festival.
Iranian-American filmmaker Desiree Akhavan is the creator of the popular web series The Slope. The film will be released in New York, Los Angeles, and VOD on January 16, 2015 by Gravitas Ventures.
