Italian horror icon Dario Argento is getting in on the crowdfunding game with his next film (horror, of course), The Sandman. The goal of the campaign (which started yesterday) is to raise $250,000 by November 8th through Indiegogo. Punk rock singer and occasional actor, Iggy Pop is already set to star as the titular Sandman.Argento, a legend in the Italian horror genre known as giallo, has directed several horror classics including Deep Red, Suspiria, and Tenebre. However his last few films (particularly Giallo and Dracula) have failed to meet expectations critically and financially, which may have something to do with the reason Argento is turning to the internet and ostensibly his fans to fund his next project.
Mr. Pop is known by many as the Godfather of Punk, and by some (13:27) as the King of Rock n’ Roll. His music credentials range from fronting The Stooges (Raw Power, Fun House) to going solo (The Idiot, Lust for Life) to collaborations with Teddybears (“Punkrocker”), Peaches (“Kick It”), and Kesha (“Dirty Love”). His acting credentials range from kids movies (Snow Day, The Rugrats) to fantasy film sequels (The Crow: City of Angels, Arthur 3: The War of Two Worlds), to collaborations with Jim Jarmusch (Deadman, Coffee and Cigarettes) and John Waters (Cry-Baby).
Argento’s Sandman is inspired by a short story of the same name by author E. T. A. Hoffman – whose work includes the book that inspired the popular ballet The Nutcracker, and its many film adaptations.
