Oscar Winning director Martin Scorsese (The Departed and Taxi Driver) is up to direct a Ramones biopic. When Scorsese finishes his latest project, he will delve into the classic New York punk rock band’s story.
The Ramones includes the singer Joey, guitarist Johnny, bassist Dee Dee, and drummer Tommy. Unfortunately, as of July 11, when Tommy passed away, there are no longer any Ramones still alive. They started in 1974 and their final record was released in 1995.
According to The Guardian, there is nowriter is attached as of now. In addition to Scorsese’s feature, a play, book, and documentary are being developed on the Ramones’ behalf.
The Ramones film will take larger leaps towards materializing after the completion of Scorsese’s next project, Silence, which begins production next year. Silence is based on Shusaku Endo’s 1996 novel, and has recently been picked up by Paramount. The film tells the story of two Jesuit priests beset by religious persecution, who travel to Japan to find their mentor. The cast of Silence includes Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Lian Neeso, and Ken Watanabe.
Prepare for the Ramones film, by listening to some of their famous songs, such as “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.”
Many of Scorsese’s past films (Mean Streets (1973)) were based in the city of New York, that he is clearly inspired by. The Ramones started jamming in New York at roughly the same time he had filmed there. We look forward to more information as the project begins to shape itself up.
