Brett Morgan is set to premiere Stages, his ambitious immersive concert film experience centered around David Bowie, at the Berlinale International Film Festival in 2027.
The concert film features archival concert footage Brett Morgan discovered while working on the 2022 David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream. The film is presented as a three-screen theatrical experience, with the archival footage played on three screens, plus transparent LED screens and specialty lighting designed by Patrick Woodroffe, who has lit live performances for several musical artists, including ABBA. The Police, Adele, and Michael Jackson. The film also contains a custom sound mix by Oscar-winning sound mixer Paul Massey.
The film aims to make audiences feel like they are watching and listening to a real David Bowie concert performance. It’ll give audience members the closest alternative to an actual David Bowie performance, with the rock and pop icon passing away in 2016 at the age of 69. The Berlinale premiere is particularly fitting, as most of the footage shows Bowie performing songs from his album Heroes, which he wrote and recorded while living in Berlin.
The film’s world premiere will be held at Berlin’s Uber Arena on February 14, 2027. That date puts the premiere at the first weekend of the Berlinale Film Festival. The Berlinale Film Festival itself runs from Feb. 10 to February 22, 2027.
