Academy Award winner Julie Andrews has confirmed that she will not reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in Disney’s upcoming third installment of The Princess Diaries.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the veteran actress explained that she does not plan to appear on camera for the sequel. Andrews, who recently published the children’s book Shy alongside her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, noted that while she remains active in off-camera work such as writing, voiceovers, and podcasts, she feels it is time for the film narrative to focus forward on Anne Hathaway’s character, Queen Mia Thermopolis. Andrews originated the role of Queen Clarisse in the 2001 Garry Marshall-directed original film and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

The project, which Disney officially announced in 2024, is set to be directed by Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride). Original franchise producer Debra Martin Chase returns to produce alongside executive producers Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack. Original book series author Meg Cabot has expressed support for the feature, noting that recent script drafts align well with the overall narrative.

Hathaway provided a status update during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, confirming that production timing remains fluid following a recent decision to re-develop the screenplay. Hathaway indicated that the creative team achieved a story breakthrough with the new script direction, which focuses on Mia’s role as an adult monarch.

Disney has not yet scheduled a production start date or theatrical release window for The Princess Diaries 3.
