George Clooney is adding another major honor to his already decorated career. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actor, director, and producer has been selected to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The award recognizes his decades of work in front of and behind the camera, as well as the lasting impact he has made on the film industry.
Clooney has shared a long history with the Venice Film Festival, dating back to his first appearance in 1998 with Out of Sight. Over the years, he has returned to the festival with several notable projects, including Good Night, and Good Luck, The Ides of March, Gravity, Suburbicon, Wolfs, and most recently Jay Kelly. In a statement shared by the festival, Clooney said Venice has given him “so many extraordinary moments” and called it his favorite film festival. He also joked that receiving a lifetime achievement award “probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.”
Festival director Alberto Barbera praised Clooney as a complete artist whose career has successfully balanced acting, directing, and producing. He also highlighted Clooney’s ability to move between blockbuster films and smaller, character-driven stories while remaining one of Hollywood’s most respected figures. Clooney will officially receive the Golden Lion during this year’s Venice Film Festival, which runs from September 2-12.
For an actor whose career has been closely tied to the festival for nearly three decades, the honor serves as another milestone in one of Hollywood’s most accomplished careers.
