Over the past weekend, Minions & Monsters, the third installment in the series of Despicable Me spinoffs, debuted with the worst opening box office in the Despicable Me Franchise’s history.
Opening on Wednesday, the film had a five-day weekend opening domestically of $64.5 million. This is even below the original Despicable Me, released in 2010, which, unadjusted for inflation, opened with $56.4 million. This opening is especially lower than those of Despicable Me 3, which opened at $99 million, and Minions: The Rise of Gru, which opened at $123.1 million.
Despite lukewarm box office, Minions & Monsters is proving a big hit with critics. The film currently has a 91% Certified Fresh Critics’ Score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest of any Despicable Me movie. The film’s critics’ score is even higher than the very first Despicable Me’s, at 80%. The film’s critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads:
The Minions bring their penchant for mayhem to Hollywood history in this affectionate and charming sendup of moviemaking magic, turning out the franchise’s most roundly enjoyable entry yet.
The reported budget of Minions & Monsters is around $85 million. With this budget, the film would need to gross around $200 million to break even, given factors like marketing and the theater’s cut of ticket sales.
Only time will tell how much money Minions & Monsters ultimately makes at the box office. For now, the film is playing in theaters.
