Despite a major holiday and the semiquincentennial one at that, theaters stayed relatively empty as Minions & Monsters from Illumination doesn’t make the cut for blockbuster, premiering to a franchise low of 61.4 million for a 5-day weekend. Pickings were sparse as far as newcomers went for the theaters. Second place went to Toy Story 5 with 31 million, beating out the other major newcomer for this weekend Young Washington, which premiered to 20.8 million for a studio high for Angel Studios. Supergirl suffered a staggering 74% decline, dropping to 9.6 million for its second week, only netting 58.4 million. While Supergirl may have crashed and burned, all hope is not lost for the DC reboots which have more anticipated films coming up for the slate, most notably a Clayface villain film slated for Halloween.
Fifth Place went to Disclosure Day with 6 million after 4 weeks cementing it as Spielberg’s return. Obsession took sixth place this week with 5.3 million in it’s eighth week in theaters, also netting a grand total of $245.3 million as it inches ever closer to the world record for most profitable horror film. Backrooms is closed behind though in seventh place with 3.3 million, seeing a boost due to the Extended Cut release hitting theaters with 190.4 million after six weeks.
The bottom three are made up of Jackass Best and Last which brought 2.7 million in its second week, beating Scary Movie which only managed to pull 1.1 million for its 5th week. Tenth place went to A24’s The Invite with the weekend total of $800,000 in its second week.
