Minions & Monsters is opening with the lowest opening box office in the Despicable Me Franchise’s history. Having officially released this Wednesday, the film had a five-day domestic opening of $64.5 million, of which $34.5 million came from this weekend. Internationally, the film has grossed $100 million, for a global opening of approximately $164.5 million.
That domestic total put the film at number one in the box office top 5. Behind it at number 2 is Toy Story 5, which in its third weekend in theaters made around $32 to 36 million domestically. Then, at number 3, is Young Washington, fittingly released this Fourth of July weekend, making $18 million domestically, far above the film’s $15 million estimate. At number 4 is Supergirl, which continues to underperform in its second weekend, making only $9 million domestically. Finally, at number 5 is Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, which made $5.5 million domestically in its fourth weekend in theaters.
Continuing into the domestic top 10 was Obsession, which at number 6 grossed a modest $5.1 million in its eighth weekend in theaters. Then there’s Backrooms at number 7, which, following this weekend’s release of a new extended edition of the movie, titled Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition, featuring an additional 16 minutes of footage, made $3.3 million domestically. At number 8 was Jackass: Best and Last, which made $14.9 million in its second weekend. Number 9 was Scary Movie, which made $1.1 million in its fifth weekend. Finally, at number 10 was The Invite, which in the second weekend of its platform release made $1.32 million. The Invite will be expanding to more theaters and territories next weekend.
