Robert Eggers is back with another gothic horror film, only this time he is turning from vampires to werewolves. The director of Nosferatu, The Northman and The Lighthouse has set his sights on another classic horror creature, and he brought some of his friends from Nosferatu with him. Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes the lead this time, with Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson also returning.
The trailer is fairly cryptic with plot details, but the standout portion is when we see the beginning of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s transformation into a werewolf at the end. The rest of the trailer sets up the eerie, dirty, destitute world in a way that audiences can now expect from Eggers. Focus Features, who also distributed Nosferatu, is clearly taking a similar approach to that film by similarly releasing Werwulf on Christmas Day. Audiences will once again have a flashy horror option to pick from this holiday amidst all the massive blockbusters such as Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. Nosferatu grossed over $181 million worldwide, so Focus Features clearly wants to replicate that success.
Besides the returning actors, Jack Morris, Jan Bijvoet, Ritchi Edwards and Bodhi Rae Breathnach star in the film. It is of course directed by Robert Eggers, and it was written by Eggers and Sjón. You can watch the full trailer below.
