Building on the DCU, Supergirl is the next feature film entry to follow up 2025’s Superman. David Corenswet will reprise his role as Superman in the upcoming film, with Milly Alcock portraying the leading role of Supergirl.
With the film’s release set for tomorrow, June 26, the film made its debut on Rotten Tomatoes. As things currently stand, the film is sitting with a 59% on the Tomatometer, just barely missing the cut and finding itself rotten 1 point below the 60% threshold. While the audience score is currently unknown, it will be a long journey if the film hopes to match the inaugural DCU feature film. Superman currently holds an 83% on the Tomatometer with critics, and a 90% on the Popcornmeter with fans.
That being said, the film is currently far ahead of the only other feature film-length adaptation of the character. Supergirl was first released as a feature-length film in 1984, with Helen Slater taking on the mantle. The 1984 film currently holds a 19% rating with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 26% for its audience score. Molly Freeman of ScreenRant expressed her thoughts on the film in a recent article.
…is a fine, even good, superhero movie from director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and writer Ana Nogueira, but it doesn’t quite reach the bar set by Superman last summer… it won’t scare off DC Studios from backing more female superheroes, because even though I didn’t love Supergirl, there’s still plenty of potential in Alcock’s character and in the rest of the DC Universe.
The Supergirl film is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Woman of Tomorrow comic book run. The film will see Kara Zoe-El (Supergirl) joining forces with Ruthye Marye Kroll (Eve Ridley) to take on the Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). Jason Mamoa will also join the cast, taking on the role of bounty hunter Lobo after previously playing Aquaman.
While the box office run for Supergirl is yet to be seen, Milly Alcock has a foothold in the DCU as she is already set to reprise her role as Supergirl in the 2027’s Man of Tomorrow. Stay tuned into MXDWN to see how Supergirl performs in its opening weekend at the box office.
