Matthew Lillard has joined the cast of DC Studios’ Man of Tomorrow. Deadline shared the news of his casting on Wednesday through an Instagram post. Lillard’s casting was previously teased by Gunn in a Threads post before it was made official. The post featured a photo of Gunn and Lillard together, with the caption, “Just casually hanging out with my longtime friend @matthewlillard for no reason.”
Lillard’s casting reunites him with James Gunn, with whom he previously worked playing Shaggy in 2002’s Scooby-Doo and 2004’s Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed, both of which were written by Gunn. He’s also no stranger to comic book adaptations, having recently played a role in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
Man of Tomorrow will feature the return of David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, though the film will not be a direct follow-up to 2025’s Superman. Lars Eidinger will play the antagonist Braniac, while Adria Ajourna has also joined the cast, playing a mysterious role speculated to be Maxima. The film will also feature the return of other DC Universe actors, including Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. James Gunn will be writing, directing, and producing Man of Tomorrow.
Man of Tomorrow will be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
