Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, is aiming to rope in enormous numbers at the box office for Amazon MGM this upcoming weekend. Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s sci-fi film Project Hail Mary has already brought in $12 million in previews alone. The film has also become in the best preview gross of the year to date, including both regular Thursday showings and all fan screenings held earlier this week.
Following its hit in previews, Project Hail Mary is projected to skyrocket this coming weekend, with some predicting it will succeed its expectations by $60 million. Others inside Amazon MGM aim a bit lower, forecasting in the $50 million range due to its genre and the often difficulty in selling it. That being said, only three non-sequel, non-franchise films have opened above $50 million at the box office, post-pandemic.
Various critics and audiences have already expressed their liking to the film. With Drew Goddard as the screenwriter, many eyes are also anticipating the film after his successful adaptation of the novel The Martian. Project Hail Mary will be opening in 82 markets, including the U.K., Brazil, Germany, Italy, Australia, China, Mexico, Korea, Japan, and France.
The film will be accompanied in release over the weekend by Searchlight Pictures’ Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
